Treignac is a very pretty medieval village about 60 km south east of Limoges
and 40 km north of the more industrial town of Tulle.
The village sits on the upper
valley of the river Vézère, where the raging waters are used to produce
electricity (from the artificial lakes of Monceaux-la-virole and Treignac)
and are also excellent for water sports (the canoë-kayak world championships
were held here in 2000), Downstream of Treignac the river becomes a lot
calmer, and passes through Brive-la-Gaillarde before eventually heading west
to join the Dordogne.
The artificial lake at Treignac (see picture
above) is a picturesque spot, complete with café, pedalos for hire, crazy golf
and small beach. If you're sporty then there's plenty to do. Although organised
activities such as forest walking (similar to Go Ape in thé UK), are only
available during the summer months, most other activities are year-round.. For
example you can hire a two-man canoe for an hour for €6 per person (includes
insurance, advice and equipment loan). And if your arm muscles are up to it you
could go for a half day 8km row from nearby Peyrissac to Veméjoux. Lessons are
also available.
Bike hire is available from €7 for two
hours. Paragliding starts from €50 for a taster session (age five and over),
and group fishing lessons and randonées (guided walks), are also available.
Enquire about any of these activities at Station Sports Nature, 1 Place de la
République, Treignac, tel: 05 55 98 00 93.
The village itself is blessed with beautiful
granite and slate-roofed architecture, tiny cobbled streets and a lovely view
down to the river. There are also plenty of boulangeries and pavement cafés,
and a very tempting looking chocolaterie. The tourist office at Place de la
Republique is open from 10-12 and 2-5 (closed Thursday mornings, Sundays and
bank holidays during the autumn), tel: 05 55 98 15 04.
